Orange Is The New Black at Icons of Style by Vanidades
You would think after fashion week I would have myself a break! I had the pleasure of attending an honorary event hosted by Vanidades, a magazine geared towards Latinas that I grew up having on the family table all the time. Aside from seeing honorees like Prince Royce, Eva Mendes, Dascha Polanco and Selenis Leyva(from Netflix phenomenon Orange Is The New Black) and the best for last with legendary fashion designer, Oscar De La Renta. In all of New York's diversity and culture, it was comforting to be around the essence I am mostly familiar with. As a photographer and writer for www.BeautyWithinTv.com, we got to interview some of these Latino/Latina superstars. The two celebrities I enjoyed seeing the most were Dascha Polanco and Selenis Leyva who play Dayanare "Daya" Diaz and Gloria Mendoza on 2013's hit show, Orange Is The New Black.
These two women are paving the way for Afro-Latinas and this makes them Fearless Leonas. Selenis even goes as far as mentioning in the interview for BeautyWithinTv that growing up as a Latina, all she saw on television were superficial-novella women with whom she could not relate to. It is difficult to want to grow up and look like the women our moms would watch on T.V. with her friends on the phone hablando mierda with one another. We had no girls to look up to other than the older girls in our neighborhood. Where were all the brown girls? Was there no space for kinks and color? It is a new age and now us spaniard-swagging, chocolate girls have a place in the world and you can see them on the 3rd season of Orange Is The New Black.
