Interview With Creative Director -Nicole LeRadical
She told me she was 17 and that she aspired to be a creative director. It sort of blew me away because I seldom meet young women that are head strong and that speak with affirmations while still in high school. I wish my younger cousins sounded like Nicole, we'd have a lot more in common and I'd have a lot more to offer them. While getting my retail therapy on at UnKnwn, Nicole helped me pick out the Air Max 1 Disco Ball in Glacier Ice. I just couldn't leave them on the shelf. I was only in town for a few days and Nicole was definitely someone I'd love to see grow.
Read my Q&A with the radical lady herself.
What do you do outside of school and work?
Outside of school and work I've been working with my friend Claude for about 5 years. He has this whole idea about this clothing line. At first, my freshmen year in high school, we started it as a street wear line. I helped promote it, I did photography, gave my business and design input.
Last year we stopped working on it and this year we re-invented a high end line, more hand made. we want it to be on a more minimalistic level. Besides that I network a lot because it's always important to have connections no matter what you want to do in life.
When did you first realize that you wanted to be a creative director?
First I realized that I wanted to be an artist. Then it started changing when I felt I wanted to be a musician, then I wanted to be a singer. And I realized that I wanted to do something with art. Something inspirational, creative. You realize that now a days its all about money. I need something where I can take my creative ideas and implement it into business. Directing, designing collections, directing photo shoots. I do that all the time. I could do that.
Who and what inspires you?
As cliche as that sounds, my mom. She came from another country, and she still doesn't have her papers. No matter what you do just make something out of it. If you want to be a sweeper, be the best sweeper you can be. Stick to it and be the best. She inspires me a lot because she struggled. I was born in Los Angeles, raised in NYC for grade school and came to Miami during middle school.
I see that you're really into colors and play a lot with it in your hair. What color do you feel the most connected to?
I'm really connected to black even though people don't consider it a color. Black to me is a really empowering color. The way I look at black it's a peaceful color. When you go to sleep, you see black. It's relaxing. I feel like black goes with everything. In an outfit, black pieces everything together. Besides black it would have to be blue. I really don't like the beach but I love the color of the water.
If you could walk next to the spirit of anybody who would it be?
It would have to be my dad. He died 4 years ago, I never knew him personally but from what I know he was very business oriented. He had a lot of wisdom that no one ever paid attention to. I feel like I could learn a lot from him.
What's on your iPod?
Sisqo Spurrs, Rob Banks, and Aaliyah. I really love 90's R&B. 50 Cent. Amy Winehouse, Red Hot Chili Peppers
Nicole is also a visual artist. Here's one of her pieces titled "Romeo + Juliet". It was inspired by her parents. The dove represents her moms innocence and elegance, while the crow symbolizes her dads strong character and the taboo that he had to face. The crow and the dove are dancing around a heart (Nicole).
When asked about this piece Nicole said "Their dancing and balance of characters gave me life. I am the best of both."
