On Sunday, February 27th, FORD model and and musician Shavone hosted the inaugural Black Brilliance Brunch in partnership with Future of Creatives and Soho House. Held in Los Angeles Soho Warehouse’s Garden, the high vibes link-up invited inspiring multi-disciplinary artists across the diaspora to celebrate one another and hold envelope pushing conversations to close out Black Future Month.

It was serendipitous to bump into creatives I’ve met along my career and meet some of my colleagues for the first time. The alfresco event featured a panel discussion with creative leaders such as director and award-winning choreographer Jaquel Knight, The Shaderoom founder and CEO Angie Nwandu; actor, film writer and artist Bre-Z; and The Purple Agency founder and former head of urban at Columbia Records Phylicia Fant.

Shavon kicked off the chat on the topic of self love, which Phylicia shared “Self love comes from understanding you matter and you have a purpose.” One of the topics that the creative industry let alone the Black community doesn’t address enough is mental health.

Angie opened up about cognitive behavioral therapy and it’s benefits. “We don’t talk about generational health, we stay on generational wealth.” She urged our community to consider cognitive behavioral therapy as a means of support in changing the behaviors that keep you from growing.

When something is not serving you, you need to check in with your mind and body to figure out the tools that you need to live a better life.
